Global Justice through Credit

Want to invest in people?

It all started in 1968, when the “idea of an ethical investment channel for churches and related organizations was put forward, with the intention that investments would provide credit to enterprises that support the disadvantaged.” In 1975, the goal to promote social justice by providing this credit to economically deprived people became reality. It was called Oikocredit.

So what is Oikocredit? According to the organization’s website, it is a worldwide financial cooperative society that “promotes global justice by challenging people, churches and others to share their resources through socially responsible investments and by empowering disadvantaged people with credit.”

Its projects include investment in microfinance, fair trade organizations and agricultural ventures. For instance, through Oikocredit, a Bulgarian couple received microfinancing to establish a bus business. It helps farmers obtain credit and insurance against natural disasters like floods and droughts. Currently, the organization states that it “provides loans, credit lines and equity to 806 partners in 63 countries worldwide through our network of local offices.”

To support Oikocredit’s work, you can either invest and become one of over 52,000 investors, or make a donation. Check out Oikocredit’s website for more information on their projects and investment opportunities.
