What is Pacer Center? It’s a place that provides assistance to children with disabilities and to their parents.

Concretely, Pacer Center offers workshops on mental health and emotional or behavioral needs, for instance, and assistance through such programs as the American Indian Project, geared to parents of Native Americans with children at risk of developing disorders. Another program is on Bullying Prevention.

It also offers web-based online presentations that incorporate visual and audible elements on special education topics. Plus it provides printed and online newsletters with information and resources for parents. Materials such as books, handouts and CD-ROMs on a variety of topics affecting families of children with disabilities are available.

Established in 1977 in the USA, Pacer Center is a non-profit with the mission: “to expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life of children and young adults with disabilities and their families, based on the concept of parents helping parents.”

Pacer does not charge workshop fees to parents of children with disabilities. The organization relies on individual, corporate and foundation contributions and support. It states that “85 percent of your tax-deductible donation will go directly to programs and services that assist all children including those with any disability and their families.”

Contributions thus help keep services free of charge to families. So, you too can help parents make decisions about education, vocational training, employment and other services for their children with disabilities.
