Promoting Disabled People’s Rights

Our world needs to be inclusive of individuals from all walks of life.

Who would disagree? This statement appears in a WebsitePlanet blog post entitled, “Over 96% of Government Websites Hide Disabled Men and Women on Their Site” (4 July 2018).

WebsitePlanet is on a mission to achieve equality and promote inclusion online in order to “ensure disabled people, and other minorities, are given the visibility they deserve”. Its main objective is to “put pressure on governments and stock photo websites to stop this online discrimination from continuing”.

It’s clear that disabled people must be treated as whole individuals, who have varied lives and interests. So why focus only on their handicap? As WebsitePlanet points out, “by focusing only on their disability, we hinder their full integration into society”.

Over the years The Good Times has highlighted the achievements and mindset of a number of people with disabilities, including Amy Purdy, Rodrigo Hubner Mendes, Mandy Harvey, Mark Pollock, Malvika Iyer and Nick Vujicic. Each demonstrates that anything is possible, if you want it badly enough and continue to strive to reach your goals despite adversity.

What can you do to promote inclusion and disabled people’s rights? Here’s what WebsitePlanet recommends:

Let your local government know that this type of treatment will no longer be tolerated. In a world where we need to be inclusive of individuals from all walks of life, this can no longer continue.

  1. Share WebsitePlanet’s article on Facebook, tweet it on Twitter – let other people know what is going on.
  2. If you have a website, include images of disabled people in NON-disability related stories, like what we did here.
  3. Add the following banner to your website with a link to the article
Together we can put pressure on governments and stock photo websites to stop this online discrimination from continuing.”
