Growing Food, and Growing People

Here’s a follow on story to Vertical Farming. It’s also about urban farming and “inspiring communities to build sustainable food systems that are equitable and ecologically sound, creating a just world, one food-secure community at a time.” Check out Growing Power.

Founded in 1993 by retired basketball player, Will Allen, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Growing Power is best described by the company itself as: “a national nonprofit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner.”

Growing Power states it is “not just growing food, but growing people.” In particular the organization aims to hire youth, providing “opportunities for young people to learn the basics of organic agriculture, develop their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, work with a diverse group of people and gain valuable life skills that will apply to future social and work experiences.”
