15 September: World Cleanup Day

Today is World Cleanup Day. Volunteers in 150 countries will pick up trash from beaches, rivers, forests and streets.

Millions of people will “achieve incredible things by joining together”, starting in New Zealand and ending 36 hours later in Hawaii. According to the World Cleanup Day website, the event’s “beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration: building bridges between disparate communities, and including all levels of society – from citizens, to business, to government.”

The idea for a day to clean up our world comes from Estonia, whose citizens came out in droves in 2008 to rid their country of illegally dumped waste. This feat inspired others to organize national cleanup days.

Billed as the “biggest civic action in human history”, how can you contribute?

  1. Find your country team here
  2. Join an event listed on the World Cleanup app
  3. Organize your own cleanup activity
  4. Invite everyone you know to join the movement

Other ways to get involved: spread the word; become a partner; be a cleanup volunteer, purchase World Cleanup Day gloves or the official World Cleanup Day t-shirt; start mapping trash. Find out more here.

The World Cleanup Day movement is supported by the Let’s Do It Foundation, an organization that supports and facilitates cleanups all over the world. One of its stated values is to “focus on creating a positive change; on tackling problems and finding solutions; on looking for opportunities to move on together; to enjoy the process, make it fun and celebrate success.”
