Redemption: There Is Life After Hate

A life after hate is possible. People do exist who used to hate but now promote tolerance, diversity and mutual understanding. They include a skinhead and convicted felon; a former organizer for the White Aryan Resistance and manager of a racist rock band; and a skinhead leader, Neo-Nazi recruiter and convicted kidnapper. These three former members of the American violent far-right extremist movement gave up their racism and hate and in 2011 formed the US non-profit Life After Hate, Inc.

Its mission: “Life After Hate is dedicated to inspiring individuals to a place of compassion and forgiveness for everyone, including themselves.”blac-white-hands

What does Life After Hate do? In its own words: “Based on our own powerful narratives of transformation and decades of experience in the extreme far-right, we support schools, community groups, NGOs, and other organizations that have a desire to understand, teach, heal, prevent, and counter racism and violent extremism in their communities.”

One of the non-profit’s programs is ExitUSA, which is “dedicated to helping individuals who wish to disengage from the white power movement and build a more positive life. Founded and run by former hate group members who have led successful lives post-movement, ExitUSA provides support to individuals who are looking to leave racism and violence behind. The organization uses a variety of strategies, including public awareness campaigns, individualized education and job training programs, and leveraging community partnerships to help individuals get their life back on track.”
